Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) reports that Fofana’s move to Milan came after lengthy negotiations with Monaco, compounded by an interrupted preseason due to ongoing talks between the clubs and France’s deep run in the European Championship in Germany.
Despite these setbacks, the French midfielder quickly regained his form and has become a key figure in Paulo Fonseca’s midfield. Since the departures of Franck Kessié and Sandro Tonali, Milan has lacked a player with Fofana’s defensive qualities.
Fofana has built a strong partnership with Tijjani Reijnders, providing a solid balance to the Dutchman’s creativity with his work off the ball. However, the concern is that he has started 14 consecutive matches, playing the full 90 minutes in 10 of them.
Fonseca is aware that he cannot expect Fofana to maintain this heavy workload throughout the season, and the player needs rest to recharge. As a result, Milan may look to strengthen their midfield during the January transfer window.
One potential target is Reda Belahyane from Verona, although it’s unlikely the player will be allowed to leave midway through the season. The same is true for Genoa’s Morten Frendrup, although a €15 million offer could persuade the club to reconsider.
