Larry bird announce A brief history of player-turned-coaches in the NBA that……

While Jason Kidd and Larry Bird are among the few exceptions to the rule, the most successful player-turned-coaches were typically role players in their playing careers. Case in point: Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, Steve Kerr and Tyronn Lue had more illustrious second careers than first while Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Kevin McHale and Elgin Baylor did the exact opposite and flopped as coaches.

To that end, JJ Redick – a solid role player in his heyday – could have history on his side as he prepares to coach the Los Angeles Lakers.

Tom Brady ready to analyze NFL games

Of the last 10 players who made the switch without prior experience, only Kerr, Kidd and Doc Rivers are still coaching in the league. As such, Redick is working with a 30% success rate.

Here, we look back on every player who made the transition without prior experience and their record with that specific team (playoffs included).

Steve Nash, Nets: 2020-23; 101-76

Derek Fisher, Knicks: 2014-16; 40-96

Steve Kerr, Warriors: 2014-24; 618-315

Jason Kidd, Nets: 2013-14; 49-47

Mark Jackson, Warriors: 2011-14; 130-119

Vinny Del Negro, Bulls: 2008-10; 86-90

Isiah Thomas, Pacers: 2000-03; 136-125

Doc Rivers, Magic: 1999-04; 176-178

Larry Bird, Pacers: 1997-00; 179-87

M.L. Carr, Celtics: 1995-97; 48-116

Quinn Buckner, Mavericks: 1993-94; 13-69

Magic Johnson, Lakers: 1993-94; 5-11

Dan Issel, Nuggets: 1992-95; 106-108

Dick Van Arsdale, Suns: 1986-87; 14-12

Paul Silas, Clippers: 1980-83; 78-168

Among those coaches, Rivers, Kidd, Thomas, Silas and Del Negro went on to coach other teams after their debut stints. Issel returned to coach the Nuggets in 1999.

Objectively speaking, only Kerr, Kidd, Rivers and Bird found sustained success. Bird stepped away from coaching after his Pacers lost to the Lakers in the 2000 NBA Finals.

Note: The list only includes players who undertook head-coaching gigs without prior experience at any level. It does not include player-coaches such as Bill Russell, interim coaches such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or assistant coaches such as Tyronn Lue or Don Nelson who ascended to the head-coaching role.

NBA world mocks Bulls’ embarrassing trade with Thunder

NBA

NBA world mocks Bulls’ embarrassing trade with Thunder

The entire NBA world thinks the Chicago Bulls front office made a mistake with a trade they made on Thursday afternoon. Per Adrian Wojnarowski with ESPN, the Bulls traded Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Josh Giddey. The Chicago Bulls received no draft picks from the Thunder What’s more important about the trade than Giddey is what the Bulls didn’t get. They received no draft picks from the Thunder for one of the league’s best defenders. The Bulls had chances to trade Caruso for draft picks this past season but chose not to in a bid to reach the playoffs. Now they’ll lose Caruso this offseason without gaining draft capital. Josh Giddey is supposed to be Lonzo Ball’s replacement Per Wojnarowski, the Bulls are hoping Giddey can replace Lonzo Ball: “The Bulls have been determined to find a playmaker to replace Lonzo Ball, and Giddey, 21, comes with All-Star potential that would be unlikely to be realized with the Thunder because of the playmaking star power that surrounded him. Point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the MVP runner-up this past season, and there is an expectation that the franchise wants to give 7-footer Chet Holmgren even more playmaking duties. “Giddey was the sixth overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft and developed into one of the league’s most creative young playmakers. The Bulls will offer him an opportunity to have the ball in his hands and more freedom to pass and score. They needed an engine for their offense, and they land that with Giddey.” NBA fans mock the Bulls for the trade

Is a blockbuster trade on the table for the Braves at the trade deadline?

Is a blockbuster trade on the table for the Braves at the trade deadline?

The Braves’ approach ahead of the trade deadline has changed significantly since the start of the season because of injuries to their two best players, Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuña Jr. Somewhat shockingly, Atlanta’s rotation hasn’t missed a beat without Strider, thanks to a couple of outstanding offseason additions. Chris Sale seems to have found his old self in Atlanta, pitching like an All-Star again that could challenge for the NL Cy Young award. But if Sale is to win his first Cy Young, he’s going to have to beat out his teammate, Reynaldo Lopez. The MLB’s ERA leader through 13 starts has been the most impactful free agent signing in the league this season, and it’s really saved the Braves, who never could have expected this kind of output from Lopez after transitioning to a starter for the first time in a half-decade. The offense has been a different story. While the Braves bats have shown signs of life over the last week, they were dormant for nearly a two-month stretch where they were arguably the worst offense in the spot. Things aren’t going to be that bad the entire season, but it’s evident this is a group with a lot of holes, ones that can be patched in a number of ways at the trade deadline. It’s not a matter of if Alex Anthopoulos will buy, but rather, what aisle will he be shopping in? With the expanded playoffs, there aren’t nearly as many sellers, but as always, there will be some marquee names changing cities that can potentially alter baseball history, as we saw last year with the Texas Rangers, who were the most aggressive team at the trade deadline, making several blockbuster acquisitions. But those aren’t the type of deals I expect Alex Anthopoulos to be searching for at the trade deadline. As always, general managers are constantly balancing the cost of winning now and what it could mean in the future. A lot of teams have made franchise-altering mistakes chasing things when they shouldn’t, and Alex Anthopoulos knows that as well as anyone. “Consider the 2015 Blue Jays,” Ken Rosenthal writes for The Athletic. “They sure looked “all-in,” acquiring shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, left-hander David Price, outfielder Ben Lowe and reliever Mark Lowe in separate trades. But even that year, their general manager at the time, Alex Anthopoulos, resisted several other offers for top prospects while saving money to land 16-year-old Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the international market.” Anthopoulos has been doing this for a long time. He made a lot of mistakes in Toronto being a little bit too aggressive, and while that aggressiveness will always be a part of who he is as a general manager, he’s learned how to harness it since coming to Atlanta. The Braves have a very bright young core that should be in the mix to win the World Series every season for many years to come. There is absolutely no reason to jeopardize that by shaking things up in a significant way and going all-in on a season where the Braves are without their two best players. The World Series could very well return to Atlanta in 2024. We saw them do the unthinkable in 2021 without Ronald Acuña Jr., but they didn’t do it by making blockbuster trades. Expect Anthopoulos to operate in a similar manner this trade deadline.

The Mets may have just caught a $17.5 million break

The New York Mets are rolling. The blue and orange have won seven games in a row to climb to just two games under .500 (35-37), and with a weak National League, are just 0.5 a game back of the final wild-card spot. While there is still plenty of time until the trade deadline and the Mets season could go south, it appears that, unlike last year, the blue and orange won’t have a complete firesale. The Mets had two of the biggest arms at last year’s deadline in Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander and got decent returns for each after agreeing to send money alongside them. Some of the cash the blue and orange sent came with conditions and one of those conditions may not be activated. Justin Verlander is heading to the injured list again Verlander was scratched from his scheduled start this past Saturday against the Detroit Tigers due to neck pain that the 41-year-old had been dealing with for the past two weeks. The Virginia native was placed on the injured list on Tuesday, retroactively to June 16. The earliest the three-time Cy-Young Award winner can return is July 1, but his timetable is unknown. This is the second time Verlander has been on the injured list. He opened the campaign on the IL with a shoulder injury and did not make his debut until April 19. Why does this matter to the Mets? When the Mets agreed to trade Verlander to the Houston Astros, the blue and orange agreed to pay $25 million of his 2024 salary and half of his $35 million salary in 2025, which will only be required if his option vests. For Verlander’s option to vest for next season, the 41-year-old had to throw at least 140 innings this season. So far, the Virginia native has thrown 57 innings across 10 starts, meaning Verlander would need to throw 83 more innings before the end of the regular season. If Verlander reaches the 140-inning threshold, then his option is vested, and the Mets must pay the Astros $17.5 million. If not, Verlander becomes a free agent, and the blue and orange are off the hook.

Mark Giordano could reach unrestricted free agency in less than two weeks. The veteran defenseman is coming off his second full season in a Maple Leafs sweater but fell out of the regular lineup early on in the season, battled injuries and was a healthy scratch for the whole of Toronto’s first-round loss to the Bruins. However, the 2019 Norris Trophy winner has no intentions of retiring and hopes to return to the NHL for what would be his age 41 season, his agent Rich Winter tells Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star. A potential 19th NHL season may not be his final one, either. “Mark has made the decision that he’s playing for a few more years,” Winter told McGran. “He feels very confident. He’s been talking to a lot of people who tell him: Don’t quit until they make you.” How much interest Giordano receives coming off the worst season of his career when the market opens July 1 remains to be seen, though, nor is it clear whether there’s a path for him to return to the Leafs. Limited to 46 appearances, he had three goals and nine points with a +10 rating while averaging 16:37 per contest, his lowest usage since 2008-09. He had a significant finger injury that cost him nearly all of December and a concussion that held him out for most of March. While his possession numbers were still strong, even relative to his teammates, he spent most of his time in the lineup alongside Timothy Liljegren, who routinely has strong advanced metrics despite some rather visible defensive gaffes. Giordano’s lack of offense and, correspondingly, lack of power play time make him a far different player than the one who had double-digit goals in six straight seasons for the Flames, including a 21-goal, 74-point monster performance that earned him his Norris. To say Giordano is an offensive specialist is a mischaracterization, though. He’s always boasted strong possession numbers, even dating back to his early days as a fresh undrafted free agent signing in Calgary, and he’s continually deployed in penalty-killing situations. Even this season, Giordano averaged 2:16 per game shorthanded, fifth on the Leafs. There was still NHL value in his game this season, but teams will wonder how much longer it sticks around as he remains the league’s oldest active player. Giordano is wrapping up a two-year, $800K AAV extension he signed in May 2022. He likely won’t cost any more than that and would even likely take a slight pay cut to earn the $775K league minimum.
