Pete Rose sent awesome message to Kentucky player for epic slide
Pete Rose wearing a Reds cap
An emotional Cincinnati Reds hall of famer Pete Rose adjusts his cap as he takes the microphone during a pregame ceremony for the unveiling of Pete Rose’s bronze statue being installed outside the stadium before the MLB National League game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Great American Ball Park in downtown Cincinnati on Saturday, June 17, 2017.Pete Rose
A Kentucky player who launched into a Pete Rose-esque slide during the College World Series gained some acknowledgement from Rose himself over the play.

Nolan McCarthy made a great play during the Wildcats’ Super Regional game against Oregon State, catching the Beaver defense sleeping after a dropped third strike.
With the game tied in the seventh inning, McCarthy took off from second on the play, then kept going when Oregon State’s pitcher did not bother to cover home plate.
In order to beat the catcher to the plate, McCarthy launched into a Superman-style slide, and he ultimately scored what proved to be the winning run.
One of Rose’s former teammates was paying attention to the play. Kentucky alum Doug Flynn, who won two championships with Rose as part of the Cincinnati Reds, reached out to Rose and sent a picture of the slide. Through Flynn, Rose sent along a response.

“After you did your Pete Rose slide the other night, I texted Pete,” Flynn told McCarthy.
“He texted back to you: ‘Tell him to keep having fun. However, the only way to have fun is to win.
Everybody’s in a better mood when you win. You can’t win every game but you should want to.
Field, hit, be a good baserunner. Don’t care who you are. Three-for-10 and you’re having a good day.
Play some good defense and have fun. I made 10,000 outs, so don’t worry about it.’”
That is a moment McCarthy will certainly never forget. His coaches will probably appreciate that Rose kept it G-rated, too.
McCarthy and the Wildcats wound up advancing to Omaha, where they open up against NC State on Saturday.

A handful of fans were not pleased that New York Yankees pitcher Clay Holmes made the All-Star team.
Holmes was one of three Yankees named to this year’s list of MLB All-Stars, which was released on Sunday. The other two Yankees who made it were star outfielders Juan Soto and Aaron Judge.
Even the most passionate Yankees hater probably wouldn’t contest either Soto or Judge making this year’s team. But fans don’t exactly hold Holmes in the same regard as the Yankees’ two beefy sluggers.
Several fans voiced their opinion on X about Holmes being undeserving of his spot. Some argued that fellow relievers such as Baltimore Orioles closer Craig Kimbrel or Boston Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen were far more deserving.
Cleveland Guardians fans felt similarlya nd believed Hunter Gaddis had a better case than Holmes.
Fans are naturally biased toward their own players. But Holmes’ name seemed to be mentioned more than most by different fan bases as the pitcher who should be replaced by (insert pitcher name here).
A few users were ready with lengthy lists of relievers who had worthy cases over Holmes.
The numbers point to Holmes actually having a pretty decent season for the Yankees. Through 37 games, Holmes has an ERA of 3.00 with 19 saves and 37 strikeouts across 36.0 innings pitched. He’s also allowed just 2 home runs thus far.
But given that there are only four reliever slots for each team competing in the Midsummer Classic, fans seem to think Holmes’ 2024 performance isn’t worthy of All-Star consideration.
Fan goes viral for his awesome moment during Yankees-Red Sox game
Yankees fan loading up to throw back Rafael Devers’ home run ball
One New York Yankees fan was arguably able to generate more excitement than the team did during the Yankees’ Sunday showdown against the Boston Red Sox.
The Yankees’ bats went silent in a 3-0 defeat against their division-rival Red Sox at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y.
The game was a pitchers’ duel through six innings as both the Yankees’ Luis Gil and Red Sox’s Kutter Crawford kept the game scoreless entering the 7th inning.
Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers’ solo home run broke the tie with one out in the top of the 7th. The ball was caught by the aforementioned Yankees fan, who just happened to have a cannon for an arm. The fan loaded up his throw and launched the ball just shy of the infield on its first bounce.
The Yankees fan nearly got Devers’ 373-foot home run ball to roll all the way back to the plate.
The Pinstripes went three up, three down in six of the game’s nine innings. They grounded into two double plays and never had more than four batters step up to the plate in a single inning.
