vwfc officially announces the signing of a great player

The 20-year-old is, strictly stats-wise, a little bit of an enigma for a cut player: he’d tallied 7 goals in 18 MLS NEXT Pro appearances, which is quite a strong return rate. Even moreso, he’d gone three-for-three to open this year’s MLS NEXT Pro season before disappearing from the matchday roster entirely.

The 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season saw Lowell make two off-the-bench appearances before being benched for fourteen straight games. Reportedly clocking in heavy with some resulting muscle issues, the footballer had a mostly quiet season that finished with an out-of-the-blue hat trick against Tacoma, with the striker showcasing some good hold-up play throughout a campaign that hadn’t been highlighted by his outright scoring ability.

“We thank Lowell for his time with our club and wish him the best in the future,” said WFC sporting director Axel Schuster regarding his release.

Wright’s career enjoyed a bright start when he turned professional at the age of sixteen, with his two years at Canadian Premier League side York United seeing him make 44 appearances, tallying nine goals and five assists before the Whitecaps took a chance on the youngster.

His stock was perhaps at its peak back then, with Wright also featuring for the Canada U-20 squad and bagging two goals in four appearances whilst on duty with them.

Like Easton Ongaro, however, he’d prove to be a CPL talent who couldn’t quite crack it in the MLS pipeline and would later be released, though it’s clear he still has plenty to offer his next club: a strong, physical forward on the verge of 21, he’s proven his worth in hold-up play, and his scoring stats are certainly an intrigue, too.

For now, it remains to be seen where the Brampton-born youngster lands next – though CPL interest is expected.
